Former Coronation Street star Katie McGlynn has spoken about making her theatre debut and said she ‘loves the nerves’ of being on stage on ITV’s Good Morning Britain. Katie won awards for playing the role of Sinead Tinker on the show from 2013 until 2020, who battled terminal cancer.
Now the ex soap-star is taking to the stage in the new production of Peter James’ thriller Wish You Were Dead. The 29-year-old is playing pathologist Cleo Morley in her professional theatre debut.
The play has just been on at The Lowry and will be touring various venues across the UK. Speaking to presenters Charlotte Hawkins and Ed Balls on Good Morning Britain, Katie said she likes ‘being out of her comfort zone’ on stage and wanted a fresh challenge.
Charlotte asked Katie: “It must feel very different when you’re used to that soap environment, how that’s filmed and stepping out on stage where literally you’re there in front of a live audience and anything could happen, how nerve racking was it?”
Katie replied: “Yeah anything could happen but I love nerves, I want to be challenged, I think I’d much rather that then kinda drift through life and become comfortable.
“I want to be out of my comfort zone, I like the thrill of it, I like having a live audience, it’s just brilliant. With every audience the reaction you get is just completely different in every venue.
“Certain jokes land better in certain areas, it is really interesting and I love it. I love the excitement of it. And what I really like about it - you get to do it in order. As an actor the story of the character and where you are emotionally with the whole story actually happens in sequence, which is brilliant.”
Ed then asked Katie if it was nerve racking appearing on stage or stepping out for the first time on BBC One’s Strictly Come Dancing. Katie laughed and said: “I knew you were gonna say that.” She added: “Definitely Strictly 100 percent.”
