Former child actor Jake Lloyd, known for his role as young Anakin Skywalker in 1999's 'Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace,' recently shared a positive update on his mental health journey. After being diagnosed with schizophrenia, Lloyd, now 35, completed an 18-month stay at an inpatient mental health facility in Southern California.
Lloyd's mother, Lisa, revealed that he entered treatment following a 'full-blown psychotic break' in March 2023. Currently residing in a new rehabilitation center, Lloyd continues to receive treatment while having the freedom to come and go as he pleases. In a conversation, Lloyd expressed feeling 'pretty good' and acknowledged the importance of ongoing treatment, therapy, and medication.
Aside from schizophrenia, Lisa disclosed that Lloyd also has anosognosia, a condition where the patient is unaware of their neurological or psychiatric condition. Lloyd described his medication as a 'cushion' that helps him manage his symptoms and maintain stability.
Lloyd emphasized the significance of hitting 'rock bottom' to fully engage in treatment and accept his diagnosis. Despite his struggles with mental health dating back to high school, Lisa expressed optimism about Lloyd's progress and praised his dedication to recovery.
Reflecting on his acting career, Lloyd rose to fame at a young age for his role in 'The Phantom Menace' and appeared in other films before retiring in 2001. Contrary to speculation, his involvement in 'Star Wars' did not influence his decision to leave acting or contribute to his mental health challenges.
Lloyd remains a fan of the 'Star Wars' franchise, enjoying video games and planning to celebrate 'May the Fourth' with his mother. While he no longer attends conventions, Lloyd finds interacting with fans therapeutic and appreciates their unwavering support.
Amid his health struggles, Lloyd expressed gratitude for the support he has received, highlighting the positive impact of fan interactions on his well-being.
