Former Celtic star pictured playing for amateur club and he scores a double

A former Celtic star has been spotted competing in the Caledonian League.

Jonny Hayes retired from professional football over the summer following a second spell at Aberdeen, where he made 145 appearances.

He rejected the chance to continue coaching the Pittodrie U16's side and instead pursued the opportunity to work alongside Stephen McManus as Celtic's 'B' team coach.

But even at 37, the Irish winger still has the determination to keep playing his own football as he scored a brace for St Mungo AFC during their 3-2 away win over Dunipace on Wednesday night.

The Bishopbriggs-based amateur outfit pile their trade in the Premier Division, and were seemingly delighted to call on Hayes' services for the match.

When he made the announcement that he was calling time on his illustrious career at the top level of Scottish football last month, Hayes, who featured 67 times for Celtic between July 2017 and June 2020, said: "It's hard to believe that over 20 years have passed since I made the move from Ireland to begin my career as a professional footballer.

"The time has come for me to end my playing days, but what a journey it has been. I never expected there to be so many highs and lows and yet I wouldn't change a thing."
