Former Celtic and Hibs defender makes shock switch to ninth tier English club

One-time Celtic fan favourite Efe Ambrose has found his next career move - and it's in England's ninth-tier.

Ambrose was released by Queen of the South last month which prompted a search for a 12th senior club of his footballing life.

The 35-year-old has 51 caps for Nigeria with his last coming six years ago. But life is a far cry from those experiences within international football now as he's joining Bury in the North West Counties League for the upcoming 2024/25 campaign.

Manager Dave McNabb hailed the acquisition of the defender, who won four Scottish Premiership titles and has vast Champions League experience to his name, as one that will excite supporters.

He said: “A ball playing centre half with an unbelievable pedigree and huge experience with over 50 international caps and over 400 professional appearances "Efe is a great character and will certainly help some of the younger players in the squad. "It’s a brilliant signing for the club and one I hope will excite the fans”

While Ambrose, who also played for Greenock Morton, Dunfermline Athletic, Livingston and Hibernian in Scotland, was asked what he will bring to Bury and stated: "Positivity, excitement, and that winning mentality.

"I want to bring something different on the pitch because for me I'm prepared to do something different at times. I try to bring something to help the team. I'm a team player first and foremost.

"I just want to win, that's the most important thing."
