Sefton Council have sold a former park and ride site to pave the way for a major new housing development.
The sale of land at Foul Lane in Formby to Homes England was approved by Sefton Council’s cabinet last week.
According to a local authority report, Homes England approached Sefton Council to purchase the land so that it could be redeveloped for housing as part of a wider 63-acre site.

Homes England already owned adjoining land at Crowland Street and according to the report and the sale of the eight-acre plot will allow the housing body run by the UK Government to develop the site in accordance with a “single master plan” delivered over multiple phases.
The report said that the alternative option of the council seeking to sell the land separately would be made difficult due to linked drainage facilities between the two plots of land.
The redevelopment of the site had previously been “hindered” by a restriction in place on the land that it could only be used for park-and-ride purposes. Following the Homes England purchase of the Crowland Street site in March 2022, however, an agreement was reached to waive the restriction and allow highway access, paving the way for the development of the two sites.
Details of how much Sefton Council will receive for the sale of the land at Foul Lane were not made public, although the report notes that the sale complies with “best value” requirements.
