Former Bristol Rovers goalkeeper Steve Mildenhall has been placed in temporary charge of Swindon Town following Jody Morris’ dismissal over the Bank Holiday weekend.
Morris has been sacked with just one game of the 2022/23 League Two season remaining with the Robins 10th in the table and out of the running in terms of promotion. The ex-Chelsea midfielder took over at the County Ground in January but Morris has been unable to get the club into the play-off conversation, and won just four of his 18 games in charge with a further four draws.
Mildenhall will now share the dugout with fellow interim head coach Gavin Gunning for the final game of the campaign against Crawley Town on Monday, with a long-term replacement then expected to be sought.
“Our aim when they took over was to push on and finish the second half of the season strongly, but as a club, we haven’t achieved our objectives,” a club statement read.
“With just one more league game remaining before we reach the conclusion of the season, we feel now is the right time to take a fresh approach as we look to bring success back to this great club for 2023/24.”
Mildenhall made 118 appearances for Rovers, first as a loanee before signing a permanent contract in the summer of 2013. He served as Gas goalkeeper during the back-to-back promotions from the Conference Premier and League Two under Darrell Clarke.
Mildenhall was famously brought on for the penalty shootout in the play-off final triumph over Grimsby Town, with Will Puddy having played the previous 120 minutes.
The 44-year-old retired at the end of the 2016/17 season to work as goalkeeper and Under-23 coach during Clarke’s reign at the Mem before returning to hometown club Swindon in 2018 to take up a similar role.
