Former Bristol City star tipped for England call-up after dominating performance against Chelsea

Former Bristol City centre-back Adam Webster has been tipped for an England call-up after his bullet header forced a draw in Brighton's clash with Chelsea.

Webster, 27, was rewarded for his terrific overall performance against the European champions when he met Alexis Mac Allister's corner on the hour mark to salvage a point for the hosts.

His Rolls-Royce performance came as no surprise to the City faithful who were fully aware of his ability following the hugely impressive year he spent as Ashton Gate in the 2018/19 campaign.

Webster joined City from Ipswich for an initial £3.5m fee with the potential to rise to £8m and he played in all but two Championship matches as The Robins finished eighth - winning the club's Player of the Year in the process.

He then became Brighton's record £20m signing in 2019 and his game has continued to go from strength to strength under manager Graham Potter, cementing his name as one of the Premier League's most reliable centre-backs.

But it only appears now that pundits are starting to sit on the edge of their seats and take notice of his ability - particularly his capability from playing out from the back.

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher tweeted after the game: "Adam Webster's passing out from the back, with both feet is better than any other England central defender."

Potter added in his post-match press conference: "I don't see anybody else with the same level of attributes that Adam Webster has in terms of wanting to build from the back, carry the ball and progress the game from those areas."

Every armchair supporter can be a football manager on Twitter when they cast their divided opinions on the social platform but it appeared almost everybody was in agreement last night - Webster should be playing for England.

The increasing attention in his performances comes at the perfect time for Webster with Gareth Southgate casting an eye on his next Three Lions squad for the upcoming international against Switzerland on March 26.

With Wolves' Conor Coady and Tyrone Mings featuring in England's last fixture, a 10-0 victory over minnows San Marino, it is no surprise City supporters are eager to see their old boy represent his country for the first time at senior level.

Webster has featured for the England Under-18 and U19 sides but you have to go back to May 2013 for the last time he represented the Lions at any level.

If Webster does get the nod by Southgate to face the Swiss in March, he won't be the first former Robins player to represent England.

Goalkeeper David James, who spent two years in BS3 before leaving in 2012, earned 51 caps while Steven Caulker picked up a solitary appearance in 2012.

Tammy Abraham is a more obvious inclusion while Danny Rose, Tom Heaton, Andy Cole and Keith Curle also represented both City and England.
