Former Bristol City defender Liam Rosenior is no longer interim manager of Derby County with Rotherham United’s Paul Warne in the frame to replace him as the club’s long-term successor to Wayne Rooney, according to multiple reports.
Rosenior was promoted from the coaching staff into the top job over the summer following the departure of the former England striker in the wake of Derby’s relegation into League One and continued financial challenges.
On Rosenior’s watch, the Rams have won seven of 12 games in all competitions and lie seventh in the division, seven points off the automatic promotion spots.
Derby possess one of the largest playing budgets in the league following David Clowes' takeover, with a huge squad overhaul in the summer including the signing of Korey Smith, but the board appeared to have lost patience with the 38-year-old as a viable option for the rest of the season.
Warne has been with Rotherham since 2016 guiding them to three promotions into Championship, albeit then unable to keep them in the league on each occasion. But the Millers have made an excellent start to 2022/23, sitting eighth in the table, level on points but once place ahead of Bristol City.
The Robins don't face Rotherham until a trip to Yorkshire on December 10, the first fixture after the month-long break to account for the World Cup in Qatar.
Rosenior’s playing career started in the Robins academy and he made 28 appearances before joining Fulham in 2003, enjoying a playing career with Reading, Hull City and Brighton & Hove Albion before moving into the media and coaching.
He remains a highly-rated coach in the game having also worked as Brighton Under-23 coach. He joined Derby in 2019, initially under Phillip Cocu and was named assistant manager to Rooney in 2021.
Reports indicate Rosenior, who was close to taking the Blackpool job after Neil Critchley's exit to Aston Villa, has been offered a new coaching role to stay on at the club but is yet to commit to a decision over his future at Pride Park.
