Former Belfast chef and his son taking Instagram by storm with tasty family recipes

As a former chef, Belfast man Darragh Milligan is no stranger to whipping up exciting meals in the kitchen.

But since stepping back from the role professionally a number of years ago, Darragh prefers to use cooking as a hobby now.

His tasty and simple home-cooked family meals have earned him a following of more than 16,000 on his Belfast Undercover Chef Instagram, and more recently it has become a family affair with his son Ronan also donning his chef's hat.

The dad-of-two insists mealtimes at home don't need to be stressful when you're juggling working full-time and family life, which is why his easy and tasty recipes have gone down a storm online.

He told Be : "I focus on 'one-pot wonders' during the week. Quick, simple, easy dishes that are ready in no time, using basic ingredients that we all have in our cupboards.

"This allows us to have a quick but satisfying dinner, easy to make so Ronan can join in, and Aoibhe, my daughter, can usually be heard shouting her agreement in the background.

"I rarely edit her shouting out of my videos, as I like to show the reality, which is us as a family spending meal times together in the kitchen, from prepping to cooking to eating.

"Pasta is a firm favourite in our house but I like to mix it up and come up with different recipes. There are lots of different quick and easy pasta dishes on my page."

When he started out on Instagram, Darragh just wanted to share his love of cooking and his favourite easy recipes with people, but it has since produced a whole new world of opportunities.

The 40-year-old explained: "It's been great working with some fantastic brands, particularly Dromona, as they have been staple products from my childhood right up to now. But the highlight for me was supporting Caroline aka Diggmama on her hugely successful Digg Deep for Kids Christmas Campaign, as not only was I doing what I love with cooking, I was also contributing to making a difference in local families' lives, and I felt very privileged to be involved."

With big shoes to fill, Darragh's son Ronan has earned himself his own army of fans as he now shares his own mouth-watering recipes on the page.

Explaining how his son Ronan, 12, got involved, Darragh said: "It started when Aoibhe was weaning and he wanted to help puree some fruit and veg. From there, he started asking if he could peel potatoes at Sunday dinner and it progressed from there. Now I'm worried he's going to show me up!"

"I really enjoy spending quality time with him in the kitchen and it reminds me of when I started to enjoy cooking with my mum when I was about Ronan's age. We have a few more exciting recipes and projects up our sleeves so watch this space," added Darragh.

Many young boys would be daunted at the prospect of sharing your cooking videos with the masses online but it seems Ronan wasn't phased.

"I wasn't nervous, because I thought if my dad can do it, I can do it", said Ronan.

The schoolboy says his favourite food is Tacos so he likes making Chilli but insists it has to be made 'with no kidney beans'.

Despite his enjoyment of food and cooking with his dad, Ronan's ambitions for the future don't lie within the food industry.

"I don't want to be a chef as it's too much pressure. I just like cooking for fun with my dad and we can't wait to teach my wee sister to cook too.

"My favourite hobbies are Football, Gaelic and Hurling. I like playing with my mates and seeing them in school. I enjoy watching football games and I support Liverpool. My ambitions are to be a sports star," he added.
