Forgotten McDonald's items we wish would make a comeback - including the McRib

Whenever McDonald's takes an item off its menu, you know burger fans are going to riot, taking to Twitter to share their grievances, with some even setting up petitions in the hope of getting the change reversed.

We saw it earlier this year when the chain axed two popular breakfast items, the bagels and wraps and there was mass outcry online with people vowing to 'boycott' McDonald's because of it.

From the McChicken Premiere to Toffee Sundaes, the fast food giants have gotten rid of some absolute classics over the years, many of which are still being talked about.

On social media, McDonald's customers have been begging the company to bring back the McRib which has got us thinking about other forgotten menu items and which ones we'd like to make a comeback. How many do you remember?

McRib

The McRib, a barbecue-flavour pork sandwich topped with slivered onions and pickles, was first sold in McDonald's restaurants in 1981 and remained on the menu for four years until it was taken off.

It made a brief appearance once more for five weeks in 2015 but there seem to be no plans for the chain to ever bring it back to the UK again - despite releasing it for limited runs in the US over the last few years.

A statement on the McDonald's website explains why the product is no longer sold in this country - and it's all to do with the grills.

"The reason for this is that the McRib patty is made from ground pork and, in the UK, we consider it important to separate pork and beef on the grill," it reads.

"Unfortunately, many of our restaurants do not have enough grill capacity to cook pork and beef products at the same time.

"The breakfast menu is different because we don't serve beef products, which allows us to have a dedicated grill for all our delicious pork products."

Despite this, Twitter users are still demanding its return, with one person recently posting: "I just want McDonald’s to bring back the McRib in the UK!"

While another tweeted: "When will you bring back the McRib in The UK? In particular my hometown of Dunstable. I have been craving for six years. Please."

The McHotDog was sold in the 90s (McDonald's)

McHotDog

McDonald's is known for its burgers and McNuggets, but back in 1995, the very first McHotDog was introduced in McDonald's in America. The hot dog made its way over to the UK in the late 1990s where it was sold briefly.

It returned to the menu for a limited time in the summer of 2002 when it was sold as a promotional item.

The hot dog is no longer available in the UK or US but is reportedly still sold in McDonald's in Japan.

Sundaes

For as long as most people can remember, the 99p strawberry and toffee sundaes were a staple dessert on the McDonald's menu.

They were ditched in 2018 as McDonald's claimed they "weren't very popular" but outrage from customers seemed to suggest otherwise.

One person tweeted: "As if I just went to McDonald's drive-thru for a toffee sundae and they said, unfortunately, we don't do these anymore... is this some kind of sick joke?"

While another said: "Dear McDonald's, why have you stopped selling the toffee sundae? My mum is heartbroken, she didn't even get to say goodbye."

In response, McDonald's UK Twitter shared this message: "The Toffee Sundae and Strawberry Sundae were removed from the McDonald’s menu on Wednesday 26, September 2018, and they were removed because they weren't very popular.

"The Government recommendations regarding sugar also played a part in the removal."

A McDonald's spokeswoman added at the time: "The removal of sundaes from our menu makes room for the mini McFlurry and promotional favourites like the Smarties McFlurry, which have proved incredibly popular with customers."

Big Breakfast

While many people love a McMuffin for breakfast, there were some who would instead opt for something a little bigger - the Big Breakfast to be exact.

Taken off the menu in 2016, the meal was said to be a marvellous hangover cure for Brits and featured a sausage patty, hash brown, scrambled egg and toasted muffin

A McDonald's spokesperson said at the time: "Whilst we are sad to see the Big Breakfast go, we are continually developing our menu and this is particularly true of our breakfast items."

Fans of the breakfast item didn't hide their sadness, with one saying: "Gutted, McDonald's have stopped doing the big breakfast meal. Might have to write to my MP."

A second posted: "WTF IS WRONG WITH THIS COUNTRY??? McDonald's don't do Big Breakfast anymore??? I didn't vote for this."

The McChicken Premiere was replaced by the Chicken Legend (acidonia150/Youtube)

McChicken Premiere

This chicken burger proved a hit with many customers until it was axed from the menu in 2007.

Outraged fans called it "the best thing on their menu" and even YouTuber Joe Sugg begged the chain to bring it back, however, he was swiftly shut down when they explained the burger had been replaced by the Chicken Legend.

However, the Chicken Legend is another fan favourite that's since been axed, with McDonald's now selling the McCrispy as their main chicken burger offering.

There were some great Happy Meal toys in the 90s and 00s (McDonald's/Disney)

90s Happy Meal Toys

All 90s kids will remember the joy of getting a McDonald's Happy Meal and excitedly seeing which toy was inside the box - from Furbies to Sky Dancers, collectable Disney items and video games, they had it all.

These days the toys just aren't the same... sorry, but it's true.

Twister Fries

In 2015 McDonald's introduced curly fries, known as Twister Fries to their menu. The fries proved incredibly popular with customers despite only being around for a short time.

However, customers in Ireland got to enjoy the curly fries for much longer, with the fries remaining on the menu until 2019.

When the pandemic hit, McDonald's in Ireland is said to have reduced their offering to a limited menu, but when things returned to normal, the Twister Fries were still nowhere to be seen.

People were so upset by this, a petition was started on change.org to bring back the curly fries, which branded the item the "cornerstone" of many orders and described their loss as a "travesty".
