Plans to build 1,500 homes, including 34-storey tower, in 'challenging' area at edge of Manchester city centre

A 34-storey tower could soon come to a forgotten corner of Manchester city centre as part of a wave of new homes.

The Victoria North project will bring thousands of homes to the city, from Ancoats in the south to Collyhurst at its northernmost point. Today (February 21), developers Far East Consortium (FEC) has announced its plans for the next batch of residences.

The announcement would see 1,550 new flats and townhouses built along Dantzic Street. The homes will be housed in seven buildings, FEC says, varying from six to 34-storeys tall.

More specifically, today’s announcement is confirming plans for consultation ahead of the formal submission of a planning application in spring. The consultation will showcase emerging detail on the delivery of 1,550 new homes across three plots of land (NT02, NT03, NT04) adjacent to FEC’s Victoria Riverside scheme on Dantzic Street.

“Red Bank represents an incredibly exciting first phase of the long-term investment into the Victoria North area - alongside the investment the Joint Venture is making in Collyhurst to the north of the programme area,” Gavin White, Manchester City Council’s executive member for housing and development, said.

“This area at the edge of the city centre is a challenging prospect, but the emerging proposals for Red Bank present an ambitious vision for the new neighbourhood, bringing life to a part of Manchester that has been underused for many years. Feedback on the proposals is always invaluable to help guide future planning applications and I would urge local people and businesses to get involved.”

The 1,550 homes will be a mix of one, two and three-bed apartments and townhouses. Some will be built-to-rent, some will be affordable, and others available for open market sale.

Dantzic Street could become a 'European style boulevard', developers say (FEC)

The hope is that, with the development, Dantzic Street will become a European-style, tree lined boulevard with around 2,000 sqm of ground floor retail, commercial and leisure space to support the development of local independent businesses. Greenery will also be at the heart of the scheme, adds Timea Nacsa, development manager at FEC.

“We have an exciting collaboration of design practices looking to bring the best of local and European design principles to create an inspiring new neighbourhood that’s diverse in character,” she said.

“Building on the Wild Urbanism concept set by the Red Bank masterplan, the scheme has been designed from the ground up with a huge focus on the public realm to create a varying landscape offer and continuous activation as you transition through the neighbourhood.

“We hope to see residents, local businesses, and stakeholders come along and meet our team to find out more about our proposals.”

The consultation opens on February 21, with two events on February 28 (3pm to 7pm) and March 2 (11am to 3pm) at GRUB on Red Bank. You can also have your say via the consultation website.
