I have a confession that probably disqualifies me from approaching this story with complete emotional detachment: I am an XSR900 simp. I own a 2020 model, I love the stupid thing to bits, and I've spent an unhealthy amount of time wondering what Yamaha could do if it gave its retro CP3 hooligan the same fancy treatment as its SP-badged siblings. Apparently, someone at Yamaha may have been wondering the exact same thing.
Buried inside Yamaha's paperwork with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is a name we've never seen in the XSR family before: XSR900 SP. This isn't an announcement, teaser, or suspiciously blurry spy photo from behind a warehouse. It's regulatory paperwork, which is somehow less exciting to look at but potentially much more interesting. The folks over at Australian Motorcycle News spotted the model in Yamaha's NHTSA documentation for the 2027 model year.
