Forget fuel prices and parking, Nottingham bus passengers reveal why they love climbing aboard

Negotiating gridlocked traffic and finding a parking spot are two of the things that bus and tram passengers are unlikely to miss as they step aboard public transport.

That's not to mention the pain that drivers currently feel when they have to fill their tanks at sky-high prices.

Nottingham is often praised for its public transport system and so Nottinghamshire Live spoke to people who use Nottingham City Transport Buses and NET trams to find out what it is they love about travelling both now and during the pandemic.

Sarah Woods, 35, a care-worker from Arnold uses the NCT green line.

She said that the buses are reliable with the only downside being the price.

“I remember when bus fare was dirt cheap and now like everything else, it’s just gotten so expensive but I love NCT," she said.

“Over the pandemic, I think that bus drivers did well enforcing people wearing masks unless they were exempt and you had the automated voice that came on reminding people of restrictions.

"I was never scared to get on a bus. I just think people used their common sense and knew not to sit next to others.

“I only wear my mask when I’m in a crowded space so I don’t mind people not wearing their masks, I’m vaccinated.

"I use them the buses all the time and they’re reliable, fast, clean most of the time and they get you where you need to go.”

Bus patronage rose slowly throughout 2021 and stabilised during the autumn of 2021 at around 75- 80% of normal use. Use dipped during the Christmas period most likely due to the Omicron variant but passengers numbers are now back at 80% of normal levels.

Jennifer Brett, 71, is from Nottingham and travelled throughout the pandemic.

“Not everyone wore their masks and the other day, I did wait a while for the bus and two came at the same time but on a whole, I am happy," she said.

"I like that my bus is every 15 minutes and I always wore my mask at the height of the pandemic."

40-year-old support worker Zee Ncube a feels like NCT works well because it’s local.

He said: “I wouldn’t say I felt safe on the bus but you just get on. I’ve been on buses in Derby, Leicester and Lincoln but in Nottingham with buses and trams, it's more connected. Nottingham buses are run by NCT so it’s a local company.”

Nottingham can be put on the map for it’s wonderfully coloured buses that can be identified by where they go in the city.

Grace Little, 27, is self employed and from Carlton. She said that NCT buses are some of the best in the country.

“I stayed in Nottingham after I finished university and I use my car a lot of the time but when I come into town, I just get the bus because I don’t have to pay for parking or rush," she said.

"It always amazes me how many buses I see and the amount of people getting on and off them, it goes to show a lot of people use them.

“Over lockdown, I used the bus once and had no problems, I felt as safe as could be, all the windows were open, sanitisers were put on the bus.”
