Publisher Devolver Digital and Skeleton Crew Studio, the developer of Olija, announced a new roguelike kung-fu fighter game, Forestrike, that is coming to Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam.

Despite the announcement, the two studios did not reveal an official release date for the upcoming game. The official description of the title says that it is a tactical kung-fu game where repetition is the key to success.

A Roguelike Kung-Fu Fighter Game

Players will take control of a martial artist named Yu as he embarks on a journey across the country in order to free the Emperor from an evil Admiral's influence. You will have to adopt techniques from one of five unique Masters.

In Forestrike, each battle will present a puzzle that players need to solve using their minds as well as their fists. Throughout his journey to the capital, Yu will encounter many foes and you will find that he is always outnumbered, according to Gematsu.

However, Yu has a secret weapon up his sleeve; the Foresight, which is a meditative technique that allows him to mentally perceive fights again and again. This is something that he does until he finds a sequence of movements that would let him overcome the odds.

When he is ready, the protagonist must fight in reality where losing means you have to start over but the game lets you have permanent progress. While winning doesn't always mean that you will be unscathed from each encounter, you will get stronger the more you travel.

Repetition is Key

The game doesn't have an exact release date but is set for a launch sometime next year and attendees of Japan's BitSummit event that is held this weekend can test out a demo.

Forestrike seems to be looking to continue Skeleton Crew Studio's "unique artistic style, combat, and fantasy-based storytelling," said Eurogamer.

Devolver Digital unveiled last month more games that it has planned for the future other than Forestrike.

These include Hyper Light Drifter developer Heart Machine's next game Possessor(s), Tenjutsu from the designer of Dead Cells, and "third-person shooter" The Crush House.

The Steam page for Forestrike also revealed that there will be upgradeable and customizable movesets as well as an overall map. The latter will let you decide what you want to do after each mission.

The question that remains is how the developer plans on balancing Yu's Foresight ability to have just the right amount of trial and error, according to Rock Paper Shotgun.
