Police confirm why they were searching grassland

Police descended on a patch of grassland following the discovery of a suspected firearm.

Just before 8pm tonight, June 20, police discovered the weapon in a field between Netherton Way and George Masters Way, Bootle. Eyewitnesses had reported a large police and forensic presence at the scene - opposite the old Girobank building - with forensic officers searching through bushes.

They were seen removing bags of evidence from the area.

Police confirmed the suspected weapon has been forensically recovered and will now be examined to establish if it is a viable firearm.

A police spokesperson said: "We are in the very early stages of investigating this incident and officers remain at the scene while enquiries are carried out."
