Forensic police drafted in after shameful conman uses elaborate ruse to steal cash from Ayrshire pensioners

Forensic police have been drafted in after a shameful conman stole cash from pensioners yesterday morning.

The fraudster, who posed as a worker from a utility company, trousered a three-figure sum from the house on Irvine Road in Kilwinning at around 11.25am.

The thief gained access to the property occupied by pensioners aged 86 and 81 and used a ruse to keep them both occupied while he rooted around the house for cash.

The man is white, around 5ft 10 to 6 ft tall, with a slim build and light/grey coloured hair. He was wearing blue jeans, dark coloured trainers, a waist-length jacket, a covid mask and a dark coloured baseball cap.

Officers have been carrying out door-to-door enquiries and forensic officers have been to the home of the couple for any additional information they can find regarding the suspect.

Detective Constable Ross Keenan said: “I would ask local residents in that area to think back and consider if they saw this man, did he try and gain access to any other homes? His behaviour is shameful, targeting elderly members of our communities. If you have any information, please do pass it on as we work to identify who this man is.”

Chief Inspector Alan Paterson added: “I would take this opportunity ask householders and relatives of elderly people to be aware of this incident and remain vigilant. Check on family members and neighbours and if you see anything which you think is suspicious or bogus, please get in touch with us.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Police Scotland via 101, quoting incident number 1479 of 30 May, or you can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where you can give your information anonymously.
