Foreign Nationals Trapped In Taiwan After Powerful Earthquake

Taiwan's Vice Foreign Minister Alexander Yui attends a press conference in Taipei

Four foreign nationals are currently trapped in Taiwan following the powerful earthquake that struck the island on Wednesday, marking the strongest tremor in 25 years, as reported by the National Fire Agency (NFA).

Among the trapped individuals are two Canadian citizens who find themselves among a group of twelve people stuck in Taroko Gorge, a renowned tourist spot located in Hualien County, the epicenter of the earthquake. The group is awaiting rescue on the Shakadang Trail, a picturesque walkway that runs alongside turquoise waters near the entrance of the famous marble-walled canyon, according to the NFA.

Additionally, two German citizens are currently trapped in a tunnel along the Suhua Highway on the eastern coast of the island. The NFA confirmed that the highway suffered significant damage during the earthquake and has since been closed off to traffic.

The Suhua Highway, known for its winding path along cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean, is considered one of Taiwan's most perilous yet stunning routes. Serving as a vital link between Hualien and the northern part of the island, the highway is renowned for its natural beauty and attracts visitors seeking scenic drives.
