The Kentucky State Police have another tool to recruit new troopers into the ranks. For the first time, graduates now get more choice in where they are posted after the training academy.
For decades, troopers could be assigned to work anywhere in the state, based on staffing needs. For the last few years, KSP used a system where the agency would place troopers in one of three posts chosen by the applicant.
Sgt. Michael Murriell is KSP Recruitment Branch Commander. He said now, applicants will get to choose where they work.
“We’re very hopeful that by providing open slots at every post, applicants are going to have the ability based on how they’re able to score to be able to potentially go back home and not have to move,” said Sgt. Murriell.
Sgt. Murriell said post positions will be filled with priority given to troopers who scored higher during training.
“If Bowling Green gets, for an example, if they’re going to get four applicants or four new troopers out of the upcoming class, if I am able to have one of the top four scores, as a new trooper I’m guaranteed to be back assigned at my home post,” said Murriell.
Sgt. Murriell said KSP hopes the possibility of choosing where they work will encourage people to apply. 100 positions are open at posts across the commonwealth. Applications must be submitted by November 25. The next training academy starts in February.
