Famously outspoken footballer Troy Deeney is taking on his toughest opponent yet: the Tories.
The Birmingham captain has written to the Government calling for the teaching of black, Asian and minority ethnic histories to be made mandatory on the school curriculum.
Troy, 33, commissioned a YouGov poll which shows teachers think education has a racial bias, with 72% saying ministers must do more to support teaching of cultural diversity.
In his letter to Education Secretary Nadhim Zahawi, Troy tells how he was expelled at 15 and informed by one teacher that he would be dead before his 26th birthday.
He writes: “I believe the current system is failing children from ethnic minorities.
“Mr Zahawi, I urge you... to review this topic again and make the teaching of black, Asian and minority ethnic histories and experiences mandatory throughout the school curriculum.”
Troy has also has launched a change.org petition.
Since he started taking the knee for Black Lives Matter, Troy says he and his family have been subjected to “vile racist abuse”, but it has “emboldened” him to campaign for change.
