The Guardian’s Football Weekly has been named the best podcast of the year at the 2023 Football Supporters’ Association (FSA) Awards. The Guardian was also nominated for the football media award, while Nick Ames and Suzanne Wrack were shortlisted for writer of the year.
It marks the third straight year that Football Weekly has taken the prize, voted for by almost 500,000 football supporters. Barry Glendenning, a regular panellist on the podcast, and producer Joel Grove collected the award at Monday’s ceremony, which was hosted by Victoria Derbyshire at Nobu in central London.
Other winners on the night included Mohamed Salah, who was named men’s player of the year, and Arsenal midfielder Frida Maanum, who won the women’s award. “I want to thank everybody for the FSA award, especially because it’s voted for by fans,” said the Liverpool forward, while Maanum called the prize “extra special to receive”.
“Mohamed and Frida have had exceptional years for Liverpool and Arsenal – both proving extremely popular with the football-going public, who’ve recognised the standards they’ve set on the field,” said the FSA’s chief executive, Kevin Miles.
Peter Drury was named best commentator for the fourth year in a row, while Ian Wright retained the title of top pundit. “I am very, very grateful for this award – I’ve been blessed to maintain an amazing relationship with the fans over many years,” Wright said. “To get an award voted for by the fans is something that I’ll never take for granted. So thank you very, very much.”
Forest Green Rovers won the climate action award, fan-led campaign group SpursReach took the fans for diversity prize, while Frome council in Somerset claimed the non-league award for helping to keep local side Frome Town afloat.
