Football tournament to be held in memory of tragic Josh Dunne

A memorial football tournament is to take place in honour of tragic Josh Dunne.

The 16-year-old from Ballymun in North Dublin, played for Bohemians-St Kevin’s Boys, who had great success with the DDSL Premier sides, DDLS team and the Bohs/SKB Under 15s team. He died after he was stabbed during what was described in court as a “stand-off or confrontation” when another man on a moped stole a delivery cyclist’s bike.

George Gonzaga Bento was found not guilty of his murder. He was also found not guilty of producing a knife and not guilty of assault causing harm to two others.

Josh and other youths arrived at the scene and got involved in the confrontation, the Central Criminal Court had heard earlier this year. Mr Bento said he was acting in self-defence and was not looking for trouble, but was trying to do the right thing for someone whose bike had been stolen.

Now, team-mates of Josh are arranging a football tournament on Saturday morning to honour their deceased pal.

The Josh Dunne Memorial Cup will take place in Coultry Park in Ballymun starting at 11am.
