Football player's neck cut in alleged pitch assault in north Dublin

Football player's neck cut A footballer received a serious injury to his neck in an alleged attack from an opposing team’s player during a match between two Dublin based clubs over the weekend.

Celtic United FC said their man had “blood coming out of his neck” following the shocking incident which occurred during a game with St Brendan’s United in the capital on Saturday.

The vicious assault took place during the 47th minute of the cup match which was being played in Belcamp Park in Clonshaugh, north Dublin. The player is also believed to have allegedly headbutted another Celtic United FC player during the melee.

It is understood that a minor row had broken out on the pitch between the teams just prior to the incident. In a statement, Celtic United FC described the attack as a “really violent” and a “dark day” for the club.

They said a St Brendan’s United player made “a cut” into one of their men’s necks before giving a “header” to a second one. The club went on to say: “The first player injured lied on the floor with blood coming out of his neck.

"The ambulance and Garda came into the pitch. The ambulance took him to the hospital.”

They confirmed that he was “alive” but was in “shock”. The club also revealed that the medical report suggested the injury was caused by a “cutting element”.

Celtic United FC went on to say: “Tight games are ok, red cards for a strong play are ok, but violence and attempts to the life of a person should not be accepted or permitted in any given occasion.”

They confirmed that they went on to win the game 2-1 and said that they wish their player a rapid recovery. In addition to their statement, the club also posted a blurred picture of a player lying on the pitch while another holds his head for support as paramedics treat him.

Celtic United FC’s win means they will advance into the quarter-finals of the Unidare Cup, according to the Athletic Union League website. Two of St Brendan’s United fixtures which were planned for this week have been postponed but it remains unclear if that is down to the attack on Saturday.

A Garda spokesman said they are “investigating a serious assault which occurred on Saturday afternoon, 29th April 2023 in Clonshaugh Park, Dublin 17.

“A man (30s) later received treatment in hospital following the incident. Investigations ongoing.”
