Football legends Frank McAvennie and Gordon Dalziel team up for music video for Glasgow singer

Scottish footballing legends Frank McAvennie and Gordon Dalziel have come together to star in a new music video for Glasgow -based singer-songwriter Kenny Lee Roberts.

The duo appeared in the new video for Kenny's single Giving It Travolta, with SuperScoreBoard stalwart Gordon stating the shoot was so much fun he reckons it’s the closest he has come to feeling like he did when scoring goals in front of full houses in his playing days.

Celtic legend Macca joked that he struggled to fit into the Saturday Night Fever-style white suit he donned for filming.

The tongue-in-cheek promo flick was shot in Glasgow’s Berkeley Suites and sees the stars poking fun at themselves while Kenny and his band perform the song – about a deluded wannabe ladies' man who can’t see the party is over.

Speaking about the shoot, Kenny said: “Giving It Travolta was so funny to shoot. We got a great venue booked out in Glasgow and enlisted the acting skills of Frank McAvennie and Gordon Dalziel, who were both absolutely fantastic and great to work with.

“The guys really nailed it but were more than happy not to take themselves too seriously, much like the rest of us.

“The promise of some free drinks also attracted some friends along on the night to be extras in the video, which turned out just as we hoped and I am sure people will really enjoy it."

Speaking about their roles, Frank said: “When I got asked to do it with my pal John McLaughlin it was a no-brainer. I played Mr Travolta, I wasn’t John Travolta, I was a fat Travolta. I’ve still got the moves, but it was good fun, and I didn’t have to act, it’s the same as me in real life, so there you go.

“It was hilarious. Right at the start me and Gordon Dalziel were trying to get me into that white suit, I certainly didn’t slide into it.

"There’s nobody that takes the mick out of themselves any more than what I do."

And Gordon admitted his role on the vid was the closest he has come to reliving the buzz of scoring in front of a packed crowd, he said: “It was something that was outside my comfort zone.

“I thought maybe this isn’t me, but I just decided I may as well go and try it and see how I feel about it but I’ve got to say, I really enjoyed it, I loved it, every minute of it.

“I missed the buzz of playing football and always scoring goals in front of big crowds. When I walked away from that video shoot that night it was like going back to that buzz that you’ve done something, really enjoyed it and achieved something so I would probably look at doing more acting, yeah.

“I was basically a DJ. I don’t know who I was trying to base it on because let me tell you, I think any DJ looking at that will be really secure in the knowledge that their jobs are safe."

The singer is also keen to continue his good work with Homeless Project Scotland, with a special beer created with Hidden Lane Brewery, Hardwired Lager, on sale now to raise money for the charity.

He’s also staging a special show at iconic music institution McChuills in Glasgow on Saturday, May 27, when he and his band will play, along with a host of his pals – including Johnny Mac and Kevin McGuire, and potentially even a Bay City Roller.

All income from gig ticket sales, which you can buy from the website, just like every penny from the beer, will go to Homeless Project Scotland.

Speaking about the gig, Kenny said: “It’s been a busy few weeks, with loads going on – we’re really happy to announce the show at McChuills as I really want to support and work with Homeless Project Scotland as much as possible, their work is incredible.

“The beer is on sale and doing well but the more we sell, the more money we raise for the charity – so dig deep and drink up people. We have just reduced prices for a little spring offer – a tenner off cases of 12 for collection or UK delivery.

“Our connection to Homeless Project Scotland actually came about through Nick Stewart at McChuills, so it’s the perfect place to stage a fundraising show – once again every penny of income goes to the charity, not just profits.

“We’re going to play a load of big fun songs, and a few mates are going to come and play too, either before we do, or come join us on stage. Or both!”

Gordon and Macca are keen to join Kenny and the band at McChuills for his charity show in May.

Gordon said: “That would be brilliant, if I can possibly make that I’ll certainly be there. I would absolutely be up for that.

“Kenny has brilliant tunes, that’s my sort of music. I’m into that, I love all kinds of music believe it or not. It’s a good album and a good song.

“I really enjoyed the song, I’m not just saying that, and I really enjoyed being part of the video as well.”

And Frank joked that he wouldn't be turning up in the white suit.
