Bright orange and red sparks were filmed flying at speed from the box as huge pockets of thick, dark smoke spread around nearby homes and into the sky. Stunned residents captured the incident, which could be seen from streets away.

Two fire engines were sent to the incident as crews scrambled to evacuate a number of locals from their homes. Residents reported having a power cut shortly after the explosion.

The stretch of road was closed for some time to allow emergency services to investigate.
