CCTV shows shooter in failed hair-salon assassination

CCTV footage has been released of two men linked to a shooting in a Sydney hair salon. (HANDOUT/NSW POLICE)

A man in hooded jumper attempted to assassinate two men inside a hair salon in a crime linked to the killing of a notorious underworld figure, police say.

Emergency services were called to a salon at Marrickville, in Sydney's inner west, after reports two men had been shot in a daylight ambush on July 7.

Officers found the men, aged 20 and 33, inside the shop with gunshot wounds.

The salon is about 100 metres from a police station and a short distance from the prime minister's electorate office.

One man suffered serious injuries in the attack but he has been released from hospital.

Police search in Cecil Hills.
Police searched at home in Cecil Hills, Sydney, as part of the investigation into the July shooting.

A short time after the shooting, two cars were set ablaze in neighbouring suburbs.

Officers said they believed the burnt-out grey Kia Stinger in Marrickville and a white Triton ute in Dulwich Hill were linked to the attack.

Two days later, a burnt-out white Toyota Aurion was discovered in Smithfield.

Police on Tuesday released CCTV footage of two men seen leaving the Toyota Aurion and getting into a white Yaris, which investigators believe might have been used as a getaway car after the shooting.

The men are wearing black tracksuit pants and hooded jumpers.

Detective Chief Superintendent Jason Weinstein said CCTV footage captured the men's movements from when they left Marrickville to when they arrived in Smithfield.

"We followed those vehicles using CCTV so we know there is no other other third party until the Yaris arrives in Smithfield," Supt Weinstein said on Tuesday.

He said at least one of the two men seen in CCTV at Smithfield was the shooter.

Police believe the motive behind the shootings was a direct correlation to the murder of Alen Moradian several days earlier in Bondi Junction.

The killing of the convicted cocaine kingpin and underworld figure spurred a series of tit-for-tat shootings across Sydney.

"This was a retribution for a previous homicide that was certainly organised-crime related," Supt Weinstein said.

One of the victims suffered "permanent life-scarring injuries" from the attack, he said.

Detectives executed three search warrants at a home in Cecil Hills in Sydney's southwest and a business at Smithfield near to where the Yaris was located.

Supt Weinstein said officers were looking for any documentation and evidence relating to who purchased the vehicles used in the attack.
