Fond memories and surprise as 'popular’ butcher's shop closes in Beeston

Shoppers in Beeston have shared how highly they thought of a local butcher's shop was after it shut and was put up for sale. Craig Dawson Quality Family Butchers, in Beeston town centre is now listed on Rightmove due to ‘the owner looking to sell this well-established business due to personal reasons’.

According to neighbouring businesses they haven’t seen the butchers open for about a month now. Locals share that it was a ‘popular’ and ‘busy’ butchers in Beeston town centre and that it had been there for as long as they could remember.

Shopper Rob Stevenson, who is 56 and from Basford, told Nottinghamshire Live that it sold quality produce. “It was a good butchers,” Mr Stevenson said.

“It's a traditional butchers. They tended to be more dear but it’s all good quality meat. It used to be quite busy back in the day.”

The butcher’s shop was previously called J A Barnsdale and was owned by John Barnsdale who hung up his apron in 2017 after owning it for 40 years. It was then taken over by Craig Dawson.

A local from Beeston, Sarah Allen who is 39, said that she liked their customer service skills as well as what was on sale. She said: “I did go there a few times, It was good they were friendly. They’ve been there for years - it’s been here forever. It’s always been busy. I’ve always seen it busy.

“It’s going to get to the point where I don’t want to come here - there’s not much apart from charity shops. Just not another charity shop or barbers.”

Beeston had recently lost its much loved Iceland store in January where there was sadness as it closed. Shoppers said they were ‘disappointed’ it was closed.

Jeff Poole, who is in his 80s, told Nottinghamshire Live that when it was Barnsdales it was very popular. Mr Poole said: "If it closed it mustn't have been doing well. Iceland is the one that shouldn’t be shut.

“I think the new owners took over Dawsons about a year ago. It was a nice butchers. But before that It was very popular - it was by Barnsdales.”

Beeston town centre welcomed a new cheesecake store last week as people queued to try Big Mike’s Artisan Cheesecakes.
