Ambitious plans have been revealed for a multi-million-pound cycle path which will connect two Carmarthenshire towns. The proposals are part of the Tywi Valley Path scheme which has been in the offing for years and will ultimately see the creation of a pedestrian and cycle route between Carmarthen and Llandeilo.
A 750m section of the path from Carmarthen Museum in Abergwili – on the eastern end of the town – has already been completed after work got under way in 2018. Carmarthenshire Council has secured planning permission for the whole western section of the project, between Abergwili and Nantgaredig, and now it wants to consult with landowners and members of the public about the eastern section which will extend all the way to the village of Ffairfach on the outskirts of Llandeilo. A fly-through video showing the stunning path as it extends east through the valley and passes several historic sites and points of interest – including Paxton Tower, Dryslwyn Castle, and Dinefwr Castle – has been released with council bosses hoping that the completed project will draw people to the county and become a visitor attraction. Parts of the path, which will be mostly flat, will run alongside the River Towy and along sections of the former Carmarthen to Llandeilo railway line.

The project will also see the construction two new bridge crossings – one over the River Cothi and one over the River Towy. Meanwhile a smaller bridge will also be built over the Gwynon river. The council has said that once completed the project will offer a “safe, mainly off-road route which could be used for leisure purposes, commuting to and from work and accessing local services”.
A planning pre-application consultation has been published in an attempt to gather’s people’s opinions on the development. The consultation will run until the end of October with hard copies available at Llandeilo Library and Abergwili Museum and digital copies available here.
“We have already secured planning permission for the western section of the Tywi Valley Path, from Abergwili to Nantgaredig, and we now want to engage with people and seek their opinions about the eastern section of this project, which covers Nantgaredig to Ffairfach,” said councillor Edward Thomas, cabinet member for transport, waste and infrastructure services at Carmarthenshire Council.
“My message to the local community is please do get involved. We really want to include your opinions in our proposals as it will help us to improve our planning application before we submit them whilst avoiding unnecessary costs and delays by ensuring that all relevant issues are addressed at the earliest stage. The Tywi Valley Path scheme has been in development for a number of years and this is the latest stage in delivering a cycle and pedestrian path from Carmarthen to Llandeilo which will be a huge boost to local towns and villages and tourism throughout our county.”
Anyone wishing to make representations about the proposed development can do so by contacting the agent by post at Russell Borthwick, Principal Town Planner, WSP in the UK, 1 Capital Quarter, Tyndall Street, Cardiff, CF10 4BZ, or by email at tvp.pac@wsp.com.
