INSIDE THE AMERICAS © FRANCE 24

The US is gearing up for the first big vote of the 2024 presidential campaign. On January 15, Iowa will hold the first caucus of the Republican nominating cycle. Since it looks set to be a shoe-in for Donald Trump, all eyes are on who will come in second. We take a closer look.

Meanwhile, this week saw masked gunmen in Ecuador storm a live TV news programme, shouting threats and spreading fear for at least 15 minutes, all of it broadcast live on air. The unprecedented assault came as gang violence and high-profile prison breaks have spiked around the country, prompting the president to declare a state of emergency

We look back at one of the biggest challenges to democracy in Brazil, the most populous country in Latin America.

Plus, FRANCE 24's Julia Sieger tells us more about the difficulties encountered by the private US Moon lander mission that launched this week.
