Florida woman charged with animal cruelty after nearly 100 animals rescued from home

  • Gail Giustino, a 77-year-old mail carrier from Stuart, Florida , was charged with animal cruelty and confinement of animals without sufficient exercise.
  • Authorities rescued 80 cats and 12 dogs from her home, which was found in squalor with a foot of animal feces in some areas and no air conditioning.
  • The Martin County Sheriff's Office intervened after receiving tips that Giustino was collecting stray cats along her postal route and she was uncooperative with previous attempts to address the situation.
  • Sheriff John Budensiek noted that Giustino had faced similar issues a decade prior, receiving up to 65 civil citations for animal confinement, and suggested she may be suffering from a mental health issue.
  • The goal of the arrest and animal seizure was to save the animals, prevent Giustino from repossessing them, and facilitate her entry into mental health court for necessary assistance.
