Florida State football coach Mike Norvell has agreed to a restructured contract that involves contributing $4.5 million of his 2025 salary to assist in launching a fundraising campaign amidst the evolving financial landscape of college sports. This decision comes after Norvell signed a new contract last spring, nearly doubling his annual salary to $9.9 million, despite the Seminoles finishing the season with a disappointing 2-10 record, their worst in 50 years.
The restructured contract will see Norvell leading Florida State's new Vision of Excellence program, aimed at raising funds as colleges prepare to share revenue directly with athletes following the new House settlement agreement. This agreement allows Division I schools to distribute a minimum of $20.5 million annually to athletes starting July 1.
In a statement released on Monday, Norvell expressed his proactive approach to financial assistance during this transitional period, emphasizing his commitment to restoring Florida State football to its former glory. He believes that his contribution will expedite the process of rebuilding the program.
Other coaches have also taken steps to support their respective programs financially. LSU coach Brian Kelly recently announced that he would match donations up to $1 million for the school's collective fund, while Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy opted for a reduced contract that channels saved funds towards revenue-sharing initiatives.
With a current record of 33-27 at Florida State, Norvell is contracted through 2031. Florida State Athletic Director Michael Alford commended Norvell's dedication to the student-athletes, praising his integrity and leadership in assessing and addressing the program's needs to move forward. Alford encouraged others to follow Norvell's example and contribute in any way possible to support the team.
As college football continues to navigate financial changes and revenue-sharing agreements, Norvell's commitment to Florida State's Vision of Excellence program stands as a proactive and impactful initiative towards the program's resurgence.
