Florida's positivity rate for COVID-19 tests has climbed to double-digits statewide over the past two weeks, while recorded deaths were up 17% and hospitalizations have also been climbing.
There were 99,630 new coronavirus cases recorded over the last two weeks among Florida residents, bringing the cumulative total to 6,058,248. With 270 more fatalities on record, 74,330 Florida residents have died.
The death total over the last two weeks reflects an increase from the 230 reported in the two weeks prior, but deaths can take several days or weeks to be reported. Many newly reported deaths are people who died before the last two weeks.
The number of cases over the last two weeks increased compared to the 59,430 reported in the two weeks prior. Positivity increased from 9% to 13.4%. That’s for new cases only and excludes anyone who previously tested positive.
Of note, the state reports deal only with Florida resident cases and exclude non-residents cases, which are no longer available.
Across the state, 1,934 people were hospitalized with COVID-19 from April 27 to May 3, according to the latest White House report. In comparison, 1,279 were hospitalized two weeks ago. Four weeks ago, it was 910.
Statewide, 15,464,021 residents, or 74% of people age 5 and up, have received at least one vaccination shot, including 8,095,670 who have completed their shot regimens but not received an additional dose through May 19. Meanwhile, 44,975 received an additional dose this week, bringing the total to 5,242,432.
Central Florida added 19,158 resident infections over the last two weeks, based on the actual date the state opened the case, for a total of 1,187,663: 6,741 more in Orange for 389,751; 1,883 more in Osceola for 117,211; 2,839 more in Polk for 205,295; 1,302 more in Lake for 87,622; 462 more in Sumter for 22,767; 1,739 more in Volusia for 119,858; 2,425 more in Brevard for 138,165; and 1,767 more in Seminole for 106,994.
