FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — A Florida man has been charged by U.S. federal agents with the kidnapping of his estranged wife, who disappeared three months ago in Spain. David Knezevich, a 36-year-old business owner from Fort Lauderdale, was arrested at Miami International Airport by the FBI and other federal agents. The charges stem from the Feb. 2 disappearance of his 40-year-old wife, Ana Knezevich, from the Madrid apartment where she had been staying following their separation last year.
Knezevich made a brief appearance in Miami federal court and is scheduled for a bond hearing on Friday. The FBI, along with Spanish National Police, Customs and Border Protection, and the Diplomatic Security Service, are continuing their investigation into the case.
According to reports, Ana Knezevich vanished after security cameras at her apartment complex were disabled by a person wearing a motorcycle helmet who spray-painted the lenses. Subsequently, her friends received text messages from her phone claiming she was running off with a man she had just met. However, her friends noted that the messages did not seem to be in her usual style, casting doubt on their authenticity.
Friends and family of Ana Knezevich expressed relief at the news of David Knezevich's arrest, with hopes that it will lead to justice and answers about her disappearance. The couple, who have been married for 13 years, own a business together called EOX Technology Solutions Inc., which provides computer support to South Florida businesses. They also own multiple properties in Fort Lauderdale, with one currently facing foreclosure.
Reports suggest that the divorce between the Knezeviches was tumultuous, with Ana's brother mentioning that David was upset about dividing their assets. However, Knezevich's attorney has denied any involvement in his wife's disappearance, stating that his client was cooperating with authorities and was out of the country at the time she went missing.
