The Florida Department of Health is investigating whether dengue was responsible for the death of a Hillsborough County resident, the agency confirmed, as locally acquired cases across the state climbed to 111, with 95 of them in Hillsborough alone.
The department has not attributed the death to dengue. Hillsborough health department spokeswoman Claire Maher told WUSF that the department is actively investigating the case and that, citing privacy rules, "the department is unable to provide additional details and information about specific cases." Family members told the Tampa Bay Times that an 80-year-old South Tampa woman who died on Sept. 4 may have been infected locally.
