A high school football assistant coach at Jesuit Tampa who allegedly punched a player in the head has been relieved of his position according to multiple reports.
The incident appears to have happened on Friday night in the first quarter of Jesuit (Tampa, Florida) against Tampa Catholic (Tampa, Florida). An unidentified Jesuit assistant coach met one of his players who was sprinting off the field and reportedly engaged him with “a right hook to the left-side of his head.”
According to the Tampa Bay Times, school president Fr. Richard C. Hermes sent out a statement to school parents a day after the incident. In the statement, Hermes underscored that the assistant involved in this incident “no longer will be coaching Jesuit football or assisting the school in any other capacity.”
Here is part of the statement from Hermes, which was released on Sunday:
“This behavior contradicts what the school stands for and is completely contrary to the expectations we have for coaches, moderators and faculty members, who are to be role models for our students and mentors in their development as young men.”
It is unclear what led to this incident between the assistant coach and the player.
