Florida Governor Ron DeSantis addressed the public on Wednesday, expressing readiness for the impending impact of Hurricane Milton. The governor emphasized the severity of the situation, stating that the state is bracing for a major hit as the hurricane is expected to make landfall late tonight or early tomorrow morning.
Describing Hurricane Milton as a powerful category four storm with maximum sustained winds of 155mph, DeSantis highlighted the potential for it to escalate to a category five hurricane. Despite hopes for weakening before landfall, there is a high level of certainty that the storm will cause significant damage.
To support local communities in their response efforts, the state has mobilized substantial resources. Supplies such as meals, water bottles, sandbags, tarps, and generators have been delivered to assist residents in preparing for the storm's impact.
Furthermore, over 11,000 feet of flood protection systems have been deployed to safeguard critical infrastructure, including hospitals, wastewater treatment facilities, and electric infrastructure. Generators have been strategically placed at shelters to ensure operational continuity and support sheltering operations.
In addition to these preparations, the deployment of Starlink internet services across the entire state of Florida aims to maintain communication networks during the storm. The state has also increased its ambulance capacity by 600 units to enhance emergency response capabilities.
As Florida braces for the arrival of Hurricane Milton, Governor DeSantis and state authorities remain vigilant and committed to protecting the well-being of residents and minimizing the storm's impact on communities.
