Florida Gators offer scholarship to 8th grade quarterback

The Florida Gators have made a verbal scholarship offer to Sabby Meassick, a Foundation Academy eighth grade quarterback who has yet to play his first down of varsity football.

Meassick, who turned 14 on Sept. 8, attended the Vanderbilt at UF game on Saturday and was offered by Gators quarterback coach Garrick McKee afterward. The youngster shared the news that afternoon via his Twitter account, where he is listed as a 6-foot-160-pound QB.

The UF offer was confirmed by Brad Lord, the former Foundation head football coach who is now an administrator for the school.

Verbal offers to young high school prospects are commonly made by college coaches but are non-binding until schools extend a written offer of financial aid.

UF was in the news last month when it was reported that McKee extended a scholarship offer to a Georgia eighth grade quarterback, Julian Lewis. Arkansas also reportedly offered an eighth grade QB last month.

Meassick has been on the scene at quarterback camps since he was six. He won the Coaches Award as a seven year old at the 2015 Collin Drafts Orlando QB Shootout. That performance established him as a prospect to watch.

He and his family toured a number of college campuses this summer.

The last Orlando area eighth grader who received a a major college football scholarship offer was Avantae Williams of DeLand. Williams, a 2020 high school graduate, is now a redshirt freshman safety at the University of Miami.

Former Edgewater wide receiver Tommi Hill was offered by Kansas before the start of his ninth grade year. He is now a freshman defensive back at Arizona State.
