As Hurricane Milton approaches, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has announced the activation of Emergency Shoulder Use (ESU) plans on certain interstate highways to aid in the evacuation process. This measure allows the left shoulder to be used as a designated lane in specific areas to facilitate the flow of traffic for those fleeing the storm's path.
According to FDOT, Eastbound I-4 and sections of Northbound I-75 are among the routes where ESU plans are being implemented. The goal is to ensure that evacuees, as well as essential supplies, emergency services, and utility crews, can reach areas that may be impacted by Hurricane Milton.
Law enforcement officials and signage will be in place to guide motorists on when they can enter and exit the shoulder lane. FDOT is closely monitoring traffic conditions along the ESU routes to manage the flow of vehicles as residents evacuate from the storm-threatened areas.
Despite heavy traffic and slower-than-usual speeds, FDOT has reported that the traffic is still moving as intended, allowing for a steady evacuation process. The implementation of ESU plans is a proactive step taken by FDOT to ensure the safety and efficiency of evacuations in the face of the approaching hurricane.
