Democratic Rep. Jared Moskowitz of Florida recently disclosed that local police in his district had alerted him to a possible threat on his life. The congressman was informed by the Margate Police Department about a potential plot just a day before the election.
The police department revealed that they had arrested a man, identified as John Lapinski, not far from Moskowitz's residence. Lapinski, a former felon, was found in possession of a rifle, a suppressor, and body armor. Additionally, a manifesto discovered with Lapinski contained antisemitic rhetoric and listed only Moskowitz's name on the 'target' list.
Moskowitz, who is of Jewish descent, expressed his concerns about the incident but refrained from divulging further details to avoid hindering the ongoing investigation. Lapinski, 41, was arrested on November 2 for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and other related charges.
The Margate Police Department stated that during their investigation, they uncovered several firearms and evidence suggesting Lapinski may have been planning a criminal act. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is spearheading the inquiry into the matter.
Moskowitz, who was reelected to represent Florida's 23rd District, emphasized the importance of security for members of Congress. Drawing from his experience on the Task Force on the Attempted Assassination of Donald J. Trump, he underscored the need to enhance protection for current and future leaders. The congressman expressed deep concerns about the security measures in place for Congressional members, particularly when they are in their districts.
He stressed the significance of prioritizing safety for all lawmakers, irrespective of their political affiliations, as they all have families they wish to safeguard. The incident has raised alarms about the vulnerability of elected officials and the pressing need for improved security protocols.
