Florida AG Ashely Moody Is Reportedly The Top Pick To Be The Next U.S. Senator For Florida

Florida Attorney General is reportedly first in line to replace Marco Rubio as U.S. Senator for the state should he be effectively confirmed to serve as President-elect Donald Trump's secretary of state.

That is according to Floridian Press, which quoted anonymous sources in Tallahassee to back its report. The outlet added that Lieutenant Governor Jeanette Nuñez is second in line for the post and Florida Chief of Staff James Uthmeier is third. The decision will be made by Governor Ron DeSantis.

The governor's office has not made up its mind yet, with earlier reports anticipating that it would only be announced as of next year. "The governor will be conducting a thorough vetting process and interview process in December that will involve several candidates," a DeSantis adviser told NBC News in late November, adding that the governor is "not in a hurry to make an important decision."

Moody seemingly has the upper hand over the other contenders, which also include President-elect Donald Trump's daughter-in-law, Lara Trump. She has been the most vocal when discussing her desire to get the post and resigned as chair of the Republican National Committee earlier this month saying she had fulfilled all her goals there.

"If I'm being completely transparent, I don't know exactly what that would look like. And I certainly want to get all of the information possible if that's something that's real for me, But yeah, I would 100% consider it;" she said in an interview with The Associated Press.

However, her father-in-law all but quashed her chances on Monday, saying he doesn't think she'll be appointed. "No, I don't," Trump answered when directly asked if he expected Lara Trump, the wife of Eric Trump, to be appointed by DeSantis. "I probably don't, but I don't know. Ron is doing a good job and it's his choice. It's got nothing to do with me," he added.
