Floods and storms up north as South West basks in winter sunshine

If you've been out and about in Bristol, or even in other parts of the South West today (January 30) you've probably been basking in some winter sunshine.

Across the South West, temperatures have been in the region of seven to nine degrees with mostly sunshine, if not a little cloud.

And, with the exception of a few spots of rain and gusty winds over the next few days, the sunshine looks set to stick around for a little longer.

That's not quite the case for our fellow Brits up in northern parts of the UK, however, as they prepare for Storm Corrie, continued cloud and rain - pretty wintry weather overall.

Northern parts of the UK also have flood alerts in place - a further 12 flood warnings had been removed from the Environment Agency's site in the past 24 hours.

So while the North wraps up warm for more ferocious weather (probably while muttering the phrase 'Winter is Coming') here's what we in more sunnier Southern climes can expect for the next few days, according to the Met Office...

South West England weather forecast

Today:

A cold but dry and bright morning. Initial light winds turning breezier through the afternoon as cloud cover also increases. Temperatures near average for the time of year. Maximum temperature 9 °C.

Tonight:

Soon becoming windy with widespread gusts continuing overnight. Outbreaks of rain pass through in the evening, with clear spells following. Temperatures staying above freezing; notably mild in the southwest. Minimum temperature 4 °C.

Monday:

Remaining gusty through Monday morning, with winds easing into the afternoon. Largely dry with sunny spells to begin but cloud increasing through the day. Chilly in the wind first thing. Maximum temperature 8 °C.

Outlook for Tuesday to Thursday:

A changeable few days with drier periods and wetter interludes. Windy at times. Feeling mild with temperatures above average for the time of year, but generally on the cloudy side.

UK long range weather forecast

The Met Office is reporting that, between Thursday, February 3 to Saturday, February 12: "An unsettled start to this period with continued cloud and outbreaks of rain, mostly across the north and northwest.

"This rainfall may disperse to introduce areas of sunshine with showers, some of which may be wintry across the northwest.

"Strong winds are also set to continue into the latter part of next week where gales are likely and possibly severe in exposed areas.

"Initially temperatures feeling mild. A north/south divide is expected to continue through the rest of the period with settled conditions and milder temperatures prevailing in the south, whilst unsettled and wetter conditions with strong winds are seen across northern regions.

"Some, mostly short-lived, spells of colder temperatures are likely in the north and northwest, where some wintery showers could develop."
