Flooding on Glasgow's Kingston Bridge sees M8 traffic delays amid heavy rainfall

Traffic is being disrupted in the centre of Glasgow due to flooding on the Kingston Bridge.

One lane has been shut down, leading to traffic delays, amid the wet weather in Central Scotland this Saturday.

Glasgow has been hit by heavy downpours throughout the day and the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) have issued a flood warning for the area.

Meanwhile, a Met Office warning for snow comes into force at 5pm this evening.

Traffic Scotland advise: " #M8 CLOSED #M8 W/B J19-J20 lane 3 closed due to flooding at Kingston Bridge Western approach.

"Approach with care."

Issuing the flood alert, SEPA say: "An updated FLOOD ALERT has been issued for West Central Scotland.

"On Saturday and Sunday, a combination of high tides, surge and strong winds means that flooding to coastal areas along the Firth of Clyde could occur. The main areas likely to be affected are low-lying coastal areas, and impacts are most likely around the time of high tide. Potential impacts could include flooding of low-lying land and roads, and disruption to travel. At Gourock, high tide is around 15:15 on Saturday, and 03:30 and 16:00 on Sunday.

"Also on Saturday, there could also be some minor impacts from surface water and small watercourses due to forecast heavy rain. Potential impacts could include isolated minor flooding of land and roads, and localised travel disruption."

The yellow Met Office warning for snow, which covers much of North and Cental Scotland, will be in place from 5pm on Saturday until 3pm on Sunday.

They advise: "Heavy snow showers may lead to some travel disruption, especially over high routes."

What to expect

  • Some roads and railways affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services

In spite of the warning for wintry weather, the latest forecast predicts heavy rain in Glasgow throughout much of Saturday. Meanwhile, wind gusts of over 40mph an hour are expected. Temperatures remain low and will dip to around 3c overnight.

UPDATE: The lane has now reopened.
