Flood warnings issued for five areas of London after heavy rain

The Environment Agency has issued five flood alerts for London after heavy rain hit the capital.

The service has said that flooding is possible in north-east areas Walthamstow, Tottenham and Edmonton where the River Lea could overspill - as it did in Hackney Wick last month

Other low lying land near bodies of water could also be at risk, with Goodmayes and Pinner also mentioned in another alert - as are south west London towns that back onto the Thames.

The Met Office has forecast rain to fall once more on Friday night in London, following on from the heavy rain that fell on Thursday

On January 5, the River Lea canal burst its banks after heavy rain, with the London Fire Brigade sending 70 firefighters and 10 engines to the west side of the river.

The Environment Agency has said “flooding is possible” once more and to “be prepared” in swathes of areas on the north-east of the capital.

“Further rainfall is forecast overnight,” a statement read. “River levels are forecast to rise.

“We will continue to monitor levels closely.

“Avoid using low lying footpaths and any bridges near local watercourses and do not attempt to walk or drive through flood water.”

There is a second alert for south-western parts of the capital where spring tides could see the Thames spill over.

Areas at risk include towns that are by the side of the Thames, including Richmond, Twickenham and Teddington.

The Environment Agency said: “Flooding of low-lying roads and footpaths is expected, which may exist for one to two hours either side of high tide. Flooding of properties is not expected.

“Astronomical tide levels are rising. The river flow at Teddington Weir is high for this time of year at 250 cubic metres per second and is rising. We anticipate the flows to remain high for the next five days.

“We are closely monitoring the situation.”

The River Pinn and River Roding areas could also be affected.

The five alerts are for:

* Loxford Water (Ilford, Goodmayes, Seven Kings)

* Middle River Roding (Loughton, Chigwell)

* Lower Lea tributaries (Enfield, Cheshunt, Tottenham, Edmonton, Walthamstow)

* River Pinn and Woodridings stream (Pinner, Ickenham)

* Tidal Thames riverside from Putney Bridge to Teddington Weir (Putney, Hammersmith, Chiswick, Brentford, Isleworth, Richmond, Twickenham, Teddington)
