Flights have been suspended and cancelled across UK airports due to the freezing weather conditions. A yellow weather warning has been put in place for London, Scotland, and south west England on Monday morning (December 12), after the UK experienced the coldest night of the year so far.
The Met Office confirmed that it was the coldest night of the year, with temperatures in the north of Scotland dropping to below minus 15 Celsius. Stansted airport suspended all flights due to the extremely cold weather, however, the airport has now announced that it is fully open and operational.
A statement posted on the airport's Twitter read: "London Stansted Airport remains fully open and operational, however, the continued cold weather may still impact your journey. Passengers should contact their airline for flight information. Please check road and rail advice before travelling." Trains have also been delayed due to the weather conditions, with drivers warned to be careful on the roads after motorway accidents, the BBC reports.

Gatwick Airport has said that the airport is open but that the weather is causing delays to flights. Passengers have been advised to check the status of their flight before departing for the airport. In a statement posted to Twitter, a spokesperson said: "The airport is open and flights are operating however snow and freezing weather is causing some delays and cancelations at the airport today. Passengers are advised to check flight status with their airline - and also local travel conditions - before departing for the airport."
An easyJet spokeswoman also addressed cancellations at Gatwick airport, saying: "Airlines operating to and from the UK today are experiencing some disruption to their flying programmes due to adverse weather, with a number of cancellations at Luton and Gatwick airports which are both affected by snow.
"Flights were also affected yesterday as snow closures affected Manchester, Liverpool, London Gatwick and London Luton airports with some flight cancellations and diversions. We are doing all possible to minimise the disruption for our customers, including providing hotel rooms and meals for those passengers affected by the cancellations.
"Customers on cancelled flights have been provided the option of a free transfer to an alternative flight or a refund. While this is outside of our control, we would like to apologise to customers for the inconvenience caused as a result of the weather."
Over 50 flights were cancelled at Heathrow on Sunday (December 11), the BBC reports. A British Airways spokesperson said that the airport has mandated a reduction in flights today (Monday, December 12) due to weather conditions and Air Traffic Control restrictions.
"Like all airlines operating to or from London, our schedule has been affected by continuing adverse winter weather conditions. We've apologised to our customers and are doing everything we can to ensure as many are able to travel as possible. We're refunding or rebooking anyone whose flight has been cancelled and providing refreshment vouchers and hotel accommodation where needed," a spokeswoman from British Airways said.
A spokeswoman for Bristol Airport said that while two flights were cancelled this morning, no others are affected: "Bristol Airport is open and flights are operating as normal. However, continuing severe weather elsewhere across the UK and Europe has resulted in two flight cancellations this morning to Edinburgh and Newcastle, no other flights are affected.
"Customers are advised to check with their airlines for further information on arrivals and departures, or visit Bristol Airport’s website for the latest information. Live Arrivals Information | Bristol Airport Arrivals & Departures We advise all customers to arrive at least two hours before their scheduled departure time and allow extra journey time to and from the Airport."
This morning, Luton Airport announced that it was operating, but advised passengers to check the status of their flight with their airline due to delays caused by the weather. A statement posted to Twitter read: "The airport is open and operational this morning but there have been a number of weather related delays and cancellations. Please check with your airline for the status of your flight."
A number of flights to and from Belfast City Airport have been cancelled or delays this morning due to the weather conditions. Planes from Heathrow, Gatwick, London City, and Birmingham that were due to arrive at the airport have been cancelled, Belfast Live reports.
Despite saying that it is "fully operational", Dublin Airport also said that a small number of flights had been cancelled, while others were subject to delays due to weather-related disruption at UK airports. A statement posted on Twitter said: "Dublin Airport is fully operational this morning. A small number of flights have been cancelled for today, while some may be subject to delays, mainly due to weather disruption at UK airports. Passengers should check with their airline for the latest info regarding their flight."
