A cancelled flight could soon leave many US travellers stranded and footing their own hotel and meal bills, after a new airline rule takes effect on 19 October 2026.

Under a change introduced by the US Department of Transportation (DOT) during the Trump administration, some disruptions that airlines once reported as within their control will be reclassified. While the adjustment may sound technical, it could directly affect what passengers receive when their travel plans collapse.
