Flag honouring Hamza Yassin's Strictly win is proudly raised in hometown

A flag honouring Hamza Yassin's Strictly Come Dancing 2022 win has been proudly raised over his hometown in Ardnamurchan.

The BBC cameraman and wildlife photographer and his pro-dance partner Jowita Przystal were presented with the iconic glitterball trophy on Saturday.

Meanwhile, back home in Scotland, locals gathered at Kilchoan Community Centre last night to cheer on their hero and on Sunday, a flag was raised over the town as they made sure everyone was aware of the news.

There was an mighty roar when Claudia Winkleman announced that the 32-year-old, who has lived in the tiny village for almost 13 years, had shimmied and lifted his way to victory in the marathon final on Saturday night.

Following his win Hamza paid tribute to his pro-dance partner, saying: "Jowita, you are an angel disguised as a human being, you’re amazing! Thank you everyone, this is the best thing that’s ever happened to me."

An emotional Hamza then gave some tips for success for viewers.

"1. Surround yourself with people whose eyes light up when they see you come in the room, 2, The top of one mountain is bottom of another so keep climbing, 3, Slowly is the fastest way to where you want to be."

It's not yet known when Hamza will return home, but he's sure to get a party-style welcome.

Around eighty people gathered in the local community hall to watch the finale, Hamza’s neighbour Gayle Richardson was in tears in the front row. She opened a bottle of champagne and said: “They are happy tears.”

Amanda Gane, who Hamza calls his “Scottish mum” said: “I’m shaking. I thought that the public would vote for him. Then his last dance was so good that sealed it.”

BBC bosses held a massive afterparty for the Strictly class of 2022, and footage has appeared on social media of Helen Skelton, Fleur East and Molly Rainford giving it big licks on stage.
