Eusexua is the thinking man’s Brat. Conceived in the aftermath of her breakup with Shia Labeouf, FKA Twigs’s magnum opus has been an unqualified hit: a bold, inventive piece of electronic music about healing, moving forward, and letting your hair down on the dancefloor. It should follow, then, that her show in support of Eusexua be as creative and high-octane as the album itself. After attending the London leg of her tour this weekend, I’m delighted to report it’s even better than that.
The Eusexua live show is somewhere between a concert, a rave, and a Singspiel opera. Split into three acts (Practice, State of Being, Pinnacle), it revolves around a cube in the middle of the stage, moonlighting at various points as a runway (cue: an excerpt from Madonna’s Vogue), a den of iniquity (read: pleasure) and a pole dancing ring. Its most interesting use is at the start of act two, when it’s draped in a fabric intended to simulate a membrane from whence she and her dancers are trying to escape. "It's like she's taken The Substance," a fellow concert goer noted. The whole thing is performance art, and utterly riveting.
