LUCKNOW: The state government has formulated a five-year plan to increase pulse production for ending reliance on imports. As per the plan, the government will target to increase the area under pulse production to 28.84lakh hectares with productivity per hectare at 12.41 quintals and production of 35.79 lakh tonnes.
Currently, UP is producing just 45% of its total requirement of pulses.
Distribution of seeds of new varieties of pulses will also be increased from 28,751 quintals to 82,000 quintals. Seeds will be given to farmers at subsidized rates and they will be encouraged to carry out intercropping to increase the area under pulses like ‘urad’ and ‘moong’.
A spokesperson said that more land would be brought under sprinkler irrigation system, especially uneven land, to increase production.
