The island that does not perform for you
Most travel is a transaction. You pay; the place delivers atmosphere. Netrani Island, off the Karnataka coast near Murudeshwar, refuses that contract. There are no guesthouses on Netrani, no chai stalls, no laminated menus with a "local special." What there is: a limestone outcrop rising from the Arabian Sea, one of the best scuba diving sites on India's west coast, and a silence so complete that the only thing filling it is the sound of your own breathing through a regulator. Divers come for the reef, leopard sharks, barracuda, schools of fusiliers moving like one thought. But the island itself, above the waterline, is scrub and rock and bird call. You cannot stay the night. You are not meant to. The place has no interest in your comfort.
