Five-time All-Ireland winning Tipperary legend Mick Burns passes away

Tipperary great Mick Burns is to be laid to rest on Saturday following his passing on Wednesday.

The Nenagh Eire Og clubman was at the coalface for one of Tipperary hurling’s most glorious eras, winning five All-Ireland medals (1958, ‘61, ‘62, ‘64, ‘65).

Largely playing at right half-back, he also won eight Munster senior titles and six National Leagues, while he claimed Munster and All-Ireland honours at minor level in 1955.

Mr Burns enjoyed some success with his club too, with North Tipperary medals coming in 1957 and ‘64, while he also had a stint with Dublin club Faughs, where he won two league titles.

He was president of Nenagh Eire Og at the time of his passing.

A statement from Tipperary GAA read: “Those who had the privilege of seeing him play fondly remember him as one of the greatest defenders in Tipperary hurling history.

“Mick remained a true and loyal supporter of his club and county right up to his passing and he will be sadly missed by all.

“Tipperary GAA extends its sincere sympathies to his wife Pauline, sons Michael, Ronan and John, daughters Michelle and Ciara, his grandchildren and the extended family we offer our deepest sympathies.”

He will be laid to rest on Saturday afternoon following his funeral Mass at St Mary of the Rosary Church, Nenagh.
