Sambhar Lake, Rajasthan, India's Largest Inland Saline Lake
Most Indian travellers who know Sambhar know it only as a name on a map between Jaipur and Ajmer. The lake itself, roughly 230 square kilometres at full spread, sits in a shallow basin that has been harvested for salt since at least the 7th century. The Chahamana rulers of Rajasthan held salt revenue rights here for centuries before the British formalised extraction under the Sambhar Salt Lake Trust, a joint venture that still operates today.
